Meditation – Know yourself as pure, radiant light

See yourself as pure and radiant light, luminous and shining

In this sutra from the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra or Shiva´s 112 Meditation techniques, we use our power of imagination to ignite the fire of meditation within. By visualizing our whole body as light, we make ourselves luminous and shining.

Throughout the day, whenever you have time to contemplate, remember to visualize your whole body as luminous, shining bright light. You can also visualize yourself as a flame centered in the body and with its sparks all around. Just try to remind yourself about this again and again throughout the whole day and visualize it over and over until it becomes second nature to you. In the beginning, you might forget about the technique. Whenever you have a short break, come back to picturing your whole being as light, shining and bright. And whenever you have time to close your eyes for a few minutes or even seconds, go deeply into this visualization technique and see your being as luminous light. At least when you wake up in the morning, before you start any activities, when you are still lying in bed, do the visualization. When you walk on the street, when you sit on a train or a bus, when you wait for somebody, see yourself as a walking ray of light or as a bright flame. See it and feel it. Continue to practice this, day in and day out.

After three weeks of continually visualizing your being as light, it will become your permanent habit and you will come back to it without conscious effort. It will start to simply happen by itself. After six weeks of practicing this technique continuously, you won´t be able to go without it. It will be like brushing your teeth, it will be part of your lifestyle. As soon as you are aware of being radiant light throughout the day you can start to take the technique into your dream and sleep states. When you are lying down in the night, before you fall asleep, again visualize yourself as light. This is the second step. Make sure you have become fully aware of being radiant light during the day before you start to visualize it ahead of falling asleep. Finally, you will see yourself as light always and you will eventually also see yourself as light during sleep. You will become consciously aware of your beingness even while your body is asleep. When this happens, you have completely gone into deep meditation and you will truly become a luminous appearance. Others will also start to notice a certain luminosity about you, they will feel that something extraordinary has happened to you. At this point, you have gone beyond your limitations and you will start to experience life on a different level. You will experience a heightened state of awareness and your mind becomes luminous, peaceful and truly happy.

It is very important not to tell anyone about your undertaking. Don´t go around and tell people that you are visualizing yourself as light. This is very important in the beginning. Just keep it to yourself and as time passes and you keep visualizing, the luminosity of your being becomes stronger and stronger until you truly become a shining, radiant center of pure light. Until this happens, just don´t talk about your practice. When it starts to happen by itself, there won´t be any need for explanations. Your radiance will speak for itself and life becomes one luminous path of bliss and ease. You will go beyond consciousness and enter the realm of superconsciousness.
